The Breeding Bird Survey 2001M.J. Raven, D.G. Noble & S.R. Baillie
Research report 295
British Trust for Ornithology
2002
"The seventh Annual Report for the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) allows us to look at the progress of the scheme over the past seven years (1994-2001). With the devasting outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD) in 2001, all national bird monitoring was affected, including BBS. Access to the countryside was severely restricted and the BTO issued its own guidance to volunteers to assist in efforts to reduce the risk of spreading the disease. With the kind co-operation of land owners and managers, and considerable effort from our volunteers and Regional Organisers, 581 squares were visited in that year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for so readily accepting and working within the constraints that FMD placed on us in 2001."

The potential value of the field scale evaluation in assessing the impact of GMHT crops on birds and mammalsD.E. Chamberlain, S.N. Freeman, G.M. Siriwardena & J.A. Vickery, R.B. Bradbury
BTO Report 293
British Trust for Ornithology
2002
"The effects of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant (GMHT) crops on farmland biodiversity in Britain are being assessed by comparing the abundance of various taxa between conventional and GMHT halves of experimental fields in a large-scale experiment termed the Farm-Scale Evaluation (FSE). Surveys of birds and mammals were carried out in spring and summer 2000 and in winter 2000/01 (birds only) in order to assess the feasibility of monitoring birds and mammals as part of the FSE. Specifically, this project aimed to assess the power of the FSE experimental design to detect differences in the utilisation of conventional and GMHT crop. This was achieved through a power analysis of various measures of bird and mammal occurrence for selected species, including measures of bird foraging activity in the crop."

BTO report 290
British Trust for Ornithology
2002
"The key aims were to: 1. Investigate the trends in breeding populations of Starlings and House Sparrows in Great Britain. 2. Examine the trends regionally and according to habitat, particularly in relation to urban, suburban and rural habitats. 3. Investigate variations in breeding success and recruitment, as well as winter and summer survival. 4. Investigate human influences, in particular an assessment of the scale and impact of control activity. 5. Identify likely causes of the declines in Starling and House Sparrow populations and place these within a whole population context

A Study of the risk of collision with power lines by Common Terns and waterbirds at Shotton Steel Works, North WalesD.E. Balmer, S.J. Holloway, N.H.K. Burton & N.A. Clark
BTO Report 280
British Trust for Ornithology
2002
"At Shotton Steel Works, North Wales, over 540 pairs of Common Terns breed within the industrial complex. A report by Henderson et al.(1995) investigated the risk of collision with power lines in relation to the stage of the breeding season and time demands on adults, the age of the birds, the significance of distance between the power lines and the breeding colony and climatic variables. Balmer (1998) re-assessed the risk of collision with power lines of terns crossing the 132 kV line and in addition investigated the use of the two breeding islands in relation to the pattern of crossing the power lines. The lagoons are also used by significant numbers of waterfowl (Cormorant, Grey Heron, wildfowl, and Gulls) outside of the breeding season, and reports by Balmer et al.(1995),and Balmer & Holloway(1998) investigated the impact of the power lines on the waterbirds flying onto and leaving the lagoons. The aim of the two studies within this report was to assess the impact of the new 132 kV line (Line 3), sited between the existing 132 kVline (Line 1) and the lagoons, on the tern colony and other waterbirds using the lagoons."

Site Action Plan for Black Redstarts Phoenicurus ochruros in the Deptford Creek AreaK. Evans
BTO Report 228
British Trust For Ornithology
1997
"The area around Deptford Power Station is in the process of being redeveloped. In late June 1997 a local ornithologist observed Black Redstarts in the area. This species is a rare breeding bird in Britain and is fully protected by legislation through its listing in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981). The site manager was informed and demolition work was halted. Detailed ornithological survey work reveal ed the presence of two females and one male. Later it was established that the nest was not located in the buildings that were due for demolition. Development work recommenced and at least four young fledged successfully. A wide range of further development work is planned for the site which could adversely affect the Black Redstarts through disturbance and habitat change. This Site Action Plan provides information on the status and biology of Black Redstarts, the impact of the site development as planned and suggests methods for ensuring that the site remains suitable for Black Redstarts.

BTO Report 212

1999
"This study, commissioned by Ove Arup Environmental, provides a site action plan for nesting Black Redstarts at Greenwich Reach East, London, with the aim of maintaining the population after site redevelopment. The UK status and the breeding biology of the Black Redstart are reviewed A visit was made in October 1998 to the proposed redevelopment site and also to several sites in the immediate vicinity where Black Redstarts are currently known to breed. Suggested mitigation measures include the provision of artificial nestboxes, the maintenance of existing nest sites wherever possible, and the retention and maintenance of as many of the existing foraging areas as possible. Potential new foraging areas should be created, e.g. by covering flat roofs with gravel.

"At Shotton Steel Works, North Wales, 470 pairs of Common Terns breed within the industrial complex. A report by Henderson et al. (1994) investigated the risk of collision with power lines in relation to the stage of the breeding season and time demands on adults, the age of birds, the significance of distance between the power lines and the breeding colony and climatic variables. The aim of this study was to re-assess the risk of collision with power lines of terns crossing the 132 kV line."

"This third Annual Report for the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) covers the years 1996 and 1997. Over 2,200 volunteers are now involved in the BBS, generously donating thelr free time to collect bird, habitat and mammal data across the whole of the UK. We would like to thank everyone who has been involved with the BBS since it began in 1994 either as a volunteer carrying out the legwork and counting the birds or as a Regional Organiser promoting the survey to local birdwatchers."
