On further Collections of Birds from the Efulen District of Camaroon, West Africa, Part II

R. Bowdler Sharpe

Colour plates (Scoptelus brunneiceps): J.G. Keulemans

Ibis: Volume 46, Issue 4, pages 591-638

1904

Opening lines:

"In this paper I continue the list of the birds forwarded by Mr. G. L. Bates during the last eighteen months. His collections are of very great importance to science, and I have included in the present memoir some valuable notes which he has sent to me on the Accipitres of Efulen and the neighbourhood, thus bringing the record of his collections up to date. It has been a privilege to name several species in honour of this industrious and observant naturalist, whose labours in the cause of science are gratefully acknowledged by zoologists."

Figures are given (Plate VIII.) of the two species of Penduline Tits of South Africa."

Since my return to England, Mr. Thompson has continued collecting and in company with Mr. W. H. Craddock, also of the Forest Department, who has materially assisted him, has visited various parts of the same States, including the remote and little-known valley of the Mekong, and the high ranges, rising to 8000 or 9000 ft., between that valley and the Salween. Messrs. Thompson and Craddock have been good enough to forward their collection to me."

On the Birds of Fernando Po

Boyd Alexander

3 colour plates (Smithornis sharpie / Urolais mariae / Apalis lopezi and Cyanomitra ursulae): J.G. Keulemans

Ibis: Volume 45, Issue 3, pages 330-403

1903

Opening lines:

"Having completed in July last my ornithological survey of the Gold Coast and its hinterland, I determined to turn my attention to Fernando Po, the largest island of the Benin group. Although it had been previously explored by Louis Fraser, Naturalist to the Allen acd Thomson Expedition to the Niger, in 1841, and by Mr. Newton, the Portuguese collector, in 1894, I had hopes of making further additions to the known fauna of the island. But the mountainous nature of Fernando Po, the lack of all roads in the interior, the form and nature of the Government, the great dearth of labour, and the evil reputation of the island for health constitute formidable difficulties to any scientific expedition."

Our excellent correspondent, Mr. A. J. North, C.M.Z.S., was very anxious that these novelties should be figured in 'The Ibis,' and we have great pleasure in being able to accede to his wishes."

Supplementary Notes on the Birds of the Yenisei River

H. Leybourne Popham

Colour plate (Emberiza citronella molessoni and Emberiza citronella brehmi): J.G. Keulemans

Ibis: Volume 43, Issue 3, pages 449-458

1901

Opening lines:

"May 8th, 1900, found me once more at Yeniseisk, accompanied by Mr. Gerald R. Peck, an ardent sportsman. The ice on the Yenisei had broken up some few days before our coming, so that we had not a day to wait for the arrival of migrants. The season was a curious one: at first came a very early dry spring, with the river breaking up exceptionally soon; then followed a long spell of severe cold. In consequence, some of the birds which bred during the first warm weather were very early, while those that did not do so were very late."

Results of an Ornithological Journey through Colombia and Ecuador

Walter Goodfellow

Colour plate (Myiadestes coracinus): J.G. Keulemans

Ibis: Volume 43, Issue 2, pages 300-319

1901

Opening lines:

"Mr. Claude Hamilton and I, having decided upon an ornithological trip to Ecuador, found ourselves at the port of Guayaquil on the 2nd of February, 1898. It had been our intention to enter South America by Buenaventura, on the west coast of Colombia, and to work the southern part of the beautiful Cauca Valley first, so as to reach Ecuador from the north. But happening to arrive in Panama the day after the Buenaventura boat had left, we decided that, rather than wait there for a fortnight, we would take that leaving for Guayaquil on the following day, and thence get another vessel up the coast back to Buenaventura."

On the Ibises of the Genus Theristicus

T. Salvadori

2 colour plate (Theristicus branickii / Theristicus branickii juv): J.G. Keulemans

Ibis: Volume 42, Issue 3, pages 501-517

1900

Opening lines:

"When Signor Festa and I were working together at the great Ecuadorian collection made by the former, we easily recognized that the specimens of the genus Theristicus collected by Festa at Vallevicioso, not far from the paramos of Cotopaxi, belonged to the distinct species which had becn described by Graf von Berlepsch and M. Stolzmann under thc name of T. branickii from specimens collected at Junin, Maraynioc, and Pariayacu, on thc highlands of Peru. On turning to the British Musuem Catalogue I was much surprised to find that Dr. Sharpe had failed to recognize T. branickii as a distinct species, under the impression that the differences of plumage relied on by the describers for the separation of T. hranickii from T. melanopis were only those of age or season. Moreover, I soon found out that the synonymy and geographical ranges attributed by Dr. Sharpe to the two species T. melanopis and T. caudatus recognized by him, required revision."
