A Monograph Of The Trochilidę, Or Family Of Humming-Birds

Supplement

John Gould

Completed after the authors death by R. Bowdler Sharpe

Colour plates: John Gould and W. Hart and others

Henry Southeran & Co

1887

Issued in 5 parts between 1880 and 1887. Collected in a single volume dated 1887. Following the authors death in 1881 the final parts and the collected edition were completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe.

Preface (R. Bowdler Sharpe):

"It fell to my lot, on Mr. Gould's death, to complete the present work together with the others left unfinished at the time of his decease. The Plates for this 'Supplement' were nearly all drawn during the lifetime of Mr. Gould; to these I have added certain others as representing species well worthy of illustration, the specimens having been lent to me by Mr. Osbert Salvin. It will be noticed that a large number of species are included in the present 'Supplement' without the accompanying plates. Whether it was the intention of Mr. Gould to have enumerated these in the work I know not; but as he originally meant to complete the 'Supplement' in four parts, I fancy that he would only have figured the most striking of the species described since the completion of the 'Monograph.' I have, however, endeavoured to include in this supplementary volume descriptions of all the species of Trochilidge discovered since 1861, when the 'Monograph' was finished; and this course will, I trust, commend itself to ornithologists. My thanks are due to Messrs. Sotheran for allowing me thus to render the work as complete as possible, notwithstanding the pecuniary loss involved by such a proceeding. It is scarcely necessary for me to record here my obligations to Mr. Elliot's admirable 'Synopsis of the Humming-Birds,' as the pages of this book reveal how much I have been indebted to his volume; and to Mr. Salvin I owe the deepest acknowledgment, for his advice in planning the present work and for having supervised the proofs of each Part."

The Birds of New Guinea, and the Adjacent Papuan Islands

Volume I

John Gould

Completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe

Colour plates: John Gould, W. Hart

Published by the author

1875-1888

This is volume one of a five volume collected edition published in 1888 and dated 1875-1888. The work was originally published for subscribers in 25 parts between 1875 and 1888. Following the authors death in 1881 the final parts and the collected 5 volume edition were completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe.

Preface (R. Bowdler Sharpe):

"In fulfilment of the promise made by the Publishers to the Subscribers, and in accordance with the intention of the late Mr. Gould, the present work has been brought to a close with the issue of the Twenty-fifth part. For the last thirteen of these parts, which have appeared since the author's death, I have been solely responsible, as will be seen by the initials appended to the foot of each article; and I greatly regret that the pledges given to the subscribers have necessitated the curtailment of the work at a period when the development of European enterprise in New Guinea and the neighbouring islands seems t point to the discovery of many new and highly interesting birds. The recent finding of two beautiful new Birds Of Paradise in North-eastern New Guinea must be the forerunner of many other discoveries, and it is to be hoped that the subscribers will feel sufficient interest in the subject to warrant the continuation of the present work, so that the avifauna of Papussia may be completely illustrated. Should such a wish be expressed, I shall be only too happy to continue the work."

The Birds Of Australia: Supplement

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould, H.C. Richter

Published by the author

1869

A single volume supplement to the Birds Of Australia (1840-1848). The material in the supplement was originally published in five parts between 1851 and 1869.

From the introduction:

"In the preface to my seven volume Birds Of Australia, published just twenty years ago, I ventured an opinion that although the work comprised every species known to inhabit that vast country up to the date of its completion, each new district that might be explored would probably afford additional species; this prediction has been fully verified, and I have now the gratification of completing a Supplemental volume, containing figures and descriptions of the novelties that have been obtained during the interval between 1848 and 1868. Were I asked if I think there are many more undescribed birds yet to be discovered in that great Southern land, I should answer in the affirmative, and add by belief that, as exploration proceeds and fresh colonies are established, new birds will be brought to light."

Handbook To The Birds Of Australia

John Gould

Published by the author

1865

Published in two volumes. No colour plates.

From the preface:

" Nearly twenty years have elapsed since my folio work on the Birds of Australia was completed. During that period many new species have been discovered, and much additional information acquired respecting those com- prised therein; consequently it appeared to me that a careful resume of the entire subject would be acceptable to the possessors of the former edition, as well as to the many persons in Australia who are now turning their attention to the ornithology of the country in which they are resident. Indeed I have been assured that such a work is greatly needed to enable the explorer during his journeyings, or the student in his quiet home, to identify the species that may come under his notice, and as a means by which the curators of the museums now established in the various colonies may arrange and name the collections intrusted to their charge. With these views the present Handbook has been prepared."

The Birds of Great Britain

Volume I

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould, H.C. Richter, J. Wolf, W. Hart

Published by the author

1862-1873

This is volume one of a five volume collected edition published in 1873. The work was originally published for subscribers in 25 parts between 1862 and 1873.

From the preface:

"The question may naturally suggest itself to some of my readers, what object I had in view in publishing a work on the Birds of Great Britain, when I had already completed a similar publication on the avifauna of Europe. My reasons are simply these :- Before the latter was completed the entire edition was all or nearly all sold; and very many persons interested in this department of science were disappointed in not being able to procure a copy of a work which they saw in the hands of so many others. Consequently, on the completion of my 'Birds of Australia,' at the solicitation of a large number of private friends and others, and influenced by the increased taste for natural history that had sprung up in the interim, I 'returned to my old love' by publishing the British Birds, excluding those of the continent, thus complying with the wishes of those persons who have especially paid attention to our native ornithology. I also felt that there was an opportunity of greatly enriching the work by giving figures of the young of many of the species of various genera - a thing hitherto almost entirely neglected by authors; and I feel assured that this infantile age of bird-life will be of much interest for science, to my subscribers, and to readers generally. That my efforts to render this publication a standard work have been successful is evidenced by its sale being double that of any other work I have given to the public. Many of the numerous ornithologists who have arisen within the last few years have rendered me much valuable information - a kindness which I duly acknowledge, and trust that, although not specially mentioned in this short Preface, they will take it for granted they have not been forgotten, and that their names have been generally associated with the various subjects to which their communications have reference."

A Monograph Of The Trogonidae, Or Family Of Trogons

John Gould

Published by the author

Revised edition

1858 to 1875

This revised edition was originally published in four parts between 1858 and 1875.

From the preface:

"It would be presumptuous in me to say that this Monograph is fully completed, or that I have figured every existing species; on the contrary, I have reason to believe that many will yet be discovered, both in the Old and New World, particularly in those remote regions which civilized man has seldom, if ever, visited: but in order to render the work complete up to the present time, I have not only done my utmost to add every species to my own collection, but have visited all the principal Museums of Europe, both public and private, and, as in previous instances, have experienced the greatest kindness and cooperation from the various eminent naturalists, private individuals, and the officers of the natural-history department of every public institution. Indeed, without the liberality I have experienced, it would be impossible that a work of this nature could have been successfully completed; and I am proud to bear my testimony to the liberal spirit which has been manifested towards me by the scientific world in general. ....

Lastly I have to remark that, although I entitle this work a second edition of the Trogonidae, it is in reality a new publication, all the plates having been redrawn, and many new species figured for the first time, so as to bring the history of the family down to the present day.

The Birds of Asia

Volume I

John Gould

Completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe

Colour plates: John Gould, H.C. Richter, J. Wolf, W. Hart

Published by the author

1850-1883

This is volume one of a seven volume collected edition published with dates given as 1850-1883. The work was originally published for subscribers in 35 parts between 1850 and 1883. Following the authors death in 1881 the final parts and the collected 7 volume edition were completed by R. Bowdler Sharpe.

Preface (R. Bowdler Sharpe):

"The late Mr. Gould shortly before his decease told me his wishes with regard to such of his works as should remain unfinished at the time of his death; and it is in accordance with these instructions that the 'Birds of Asia' has now been brought to a close. The work was commenced in 1850, and during the thirty-three years that have elapsed no less than 530 species have been figured ; but of course a large number of Asiatic species still remain unnoticed. The long connexion which had existed between Mr. Gould and ornithologists in all parts of the globe enabled him to obtain an early sight of rare and newly described species; and consequently many birds are figured in the present work, illustrations of which are not to be found elsewhere. Had the author lived he would doubtless have endeavoured to complete the 'Birds of Asia' in its entirety, as the subject was one in which he took the greatest personal interest. As far as the writer is concerned, he has had but a small duty to perform, as the Plates for the concluding parts of the work had nearly all been designed by Mr. Gould before his death, and have been faithfully produced on stone by his old and valued coadjutor Mr. Hart. I have endeavoured to write the concluding articles as I believe Mr. Gould would have wished them to have been done, and as far as possible in harmony with the rest of the work. In every case the initials 'R. B. S.' are appended, so that any errors or omissions can be saddled on the right shoulders. The work has been arranged according to the classifications adopted by Mr. Gould throughout his lifetime; and in giving title-pages and indexes to the species, I have added the exact dates of publication, for the benefit of ornithologists who wish to quote the work."

A Monograph Of The Trochilidae, Or Family Of Humming-Birds

Volume I

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould and H.C. Richter

Published by the author

1849-61

This is volume one of a five volume collected edition published in 1861. The work was originally published for subscribers in 25 parts between 1849 and 1861.

From the preface:

"That early impressions of the mind are vividly retained, while events of the day flit from our memory, must have been experienced by every one. How vivid, then, is my recollection of the first Humming-Bird which met my admiring gaze! with what delight did I examine its tiny body and feast my eyes on its glittering plumage ! This early impression, I well remember, gradually increased into an earnest desire to attain a more intimate acquaintance with the lovely group of birds to which it pertained, and was still further strengthened when an opportunity was afforded me of inspecting the, at that time, unique collection of the Trochilidae formed by the late Mr. George Loddiges, of Hackney. This gentleman and myself were imbued with a kindred spirit in the love we both entertained for this family of living gems. To describe the feeling which animated us with regard to them is impossible; it can, in fact, only be realized by those who have made Natural History a study, and who pursue the investigation of its charming mysteries with ardour and delight. That our enthusiasm and excitement with regard to most things become lessened, if not deadened, by time, particularly when we have acquired what we vainly consider a complete knowledge of the subject, is, I fear, too often the case with most of us ; not so, however, I believe with those who take up the study of the Family of Humming-Birds. Certainly I can affirm that such is not the case with myself; for the pleasure which I experience on seeing a Humming-Bird is as great at the present moment as when I first saw one. During the first twenty years of my acquaintance with these wonderful works of creation, my thoughts were often directed to them in the day, and my night dreams have not unfrequently carried me to their native forests in the distant country of America."

The Mammals Of Australia

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould, Elizabeth Gould, H.C. Richter

Volume I

Published by the author

1845 to 1863

This is volume one of a three volume collected edition published in 1863. The work was originally published for subscribers in 13 parts between 1845 and 1863.

From the preface:

"In the Preface to the Birds Of Australia, which has now been fifteen years before the public, I stated that 'Having in the Summer of 1837 brought my work on the Birds Of Europe to a successful termination, I was naturally desirous of turning my attention to the ornithology of some other region; and a variety of opportune and concurring circumstances induced me to select that of Australia, the Birds of which, though invested with the highest degree of interest, had been almost entirely neglected.' But if the Birds of Australia had not received that degree of attention from the scientific ornithologist which their interest demanded, I can assert, without fear of contradiction, that its highly curious and interesting Mammals had been still less investigated. It was not, however, until I arrived in the country, and found myself surrounded by objects as strange as if I had been transported to another planet, that I conceived the idea of devoting a portion of my attention to the mammalian class of its extraordinary fauna."

"Her Majesty's ship Sulphur, accompanied by her consort the Starling, quitted the coast of England on the 24th December, 1835, for the purpose of prosecuting surveys and scientific enquiries on the shores and among the islands of the Pacific Ocean. On her way to the Brazils, she touched at Madeira and Teneriffe, and on the 19th February, 1836, anchored at Rio Janeiro. After a short stay, she sailed for St. Catherine's, which she reached on the 28th. The vessel requiring a thorough refit previous to her doubling Cape Horn, some weeks were consumed here, during which time the vegetation of the surrounding beautiful shores was examined, and the nucleus of the future collections formed. On the morning of the 28th March, she again weighed anchor, ran into Monte Video for a few hours, thence proceeded to Cape Horn, and, after a tedious passage, arrived at Valparaiso, in 33° S. lat., on the 9th June."

Part III: Birds

John Gould

Additional text: George Robert Gray, T.C. Eyton and Charles Darwin

Colour plates: John Gould, Elizabeth Gould

Smith Elder and Co

1841

From the Advertisement:

"When I presented my collection of Birds to the Zoological Society, Mr. Gould kindly undertook to furnish me with descriptions of the new species and names of those already known. This he has performed, but owing to the hurry, consequent on his departure for Australia, an expedition from which the science of Ornithology will derive such great advantages, he was compelled to leave some part of his manuscript so far incomplete, that without the possibility of personal communication with him, I was left in doubt on some essential points. Mr. George Robert Gray, the ornithological assistant in the Zoological department of the British Museum, has in the most obliging manner undertaken to obviate this difficulty, by furnishing me with information with respect to some parts of the general arrangement, and likewise on that most intricate subject, the knowledge of what species have already been described, and the use of proper generic terms. I shall endeavour in every part of the text to refer to Mr. G. R. Gray's assistance, where I have used it. As some of Mr. Gould's descriptions appeared to me brief, I have enlarged them, but have always endeavoured to retain his specific character; so that, by this means, I trust I shall not throw any obscurity on what he considers the essential character in each case ; but at the same time, I hope, that these additional remarks may render the work more complete. The accompanying illustrations, which are fifty in number, were taken from sketches made by Mr. Gould himself, and executed on stone by Mrs. Gould, with that admirable success, which has attended all her works. They are all of the natural size with the exception of four raptorial birds, a goose and a species of Rhea. As the dimensions of these latter birds are given, their proportional reduction will readily be seen."

The Birds Of Australia

Colour plates: John Gould, Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear, Waterhouse Hawkins, H.C. Richter

Volume I

Published by the author

1840 to 1848

This is volume one of a seven volume collected edition published in 1848. The work was originally published for subscribers in 36 parts between 1840 and 1848.

From the preface:

"Having in the Summer of 1837 brought my work on the Birds Of Europe to a successful termination, I was naturally desirous of turning my attention to the ornithology of some other region; and a variety of concurring circumstances induced me to select that of Australia, the Birds of which, though invested with the highest degree of interest, had been almost entirely neglected. Dr. Shaw in his Zoology Of new Holland, had devoted a few plates to the subject, from specimens collected by Sir Joseph Banks during the first voyage of Captain Cook; the Birds Of New Holland by Lewin comprised not more than twenty-six plates; and figures and descriptions of a few species were given in the earlier voyages of Phillip, White and Collins, and the more recent one of King. At a subsequent period the late Mr. Vigors and Dr. Horsfield commenced an elaborate memoir on the Collection of Australian Birds in the possession of the Linnean Society; but unfortunately, they did not proceed farther than the Meliphagidae, and the non-completion of their labours is the more to be regretted, inasmuch as the Linnean Society's collection of Australian Birds, at that time the finest extant, comprised many specimens collected by Mr. Brown during his voyage with the celebrated navigator Flinders, and was moreover enriched with some interesting notes by the late Mr. George Cayley, by whom the collection was chiefly formed. Descriptions of many Australian birds were also included in the works of Latham, Shaw, Cuvier and Vieillot, as well as in several of the recent French voyages of discovery; still no general work on the subject had been undertaken, and nearly all that had been recorded by the various writers above enumerated, had reference almost exclusively to the productions of New South Wales and Van Dieman's Land, these being almost the only explored portions of that great country. In the absence, then, of any general work on the Birds of Australia, the field was comparatively a new one, and of no ordinary degree of interest, from the circumstances of its being one of the finest possessions of the British Crown, and from its natural productions being as remarkable for the anomalous nature of their forms, as for their beauty, and the singularity of their habits."

A Monograph Of The Trogonidae, Or Family Of Trogons

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould, Elizabeth Gould

Published by the author

1835 to 1838

A revised edition was published between 1858 and 1875.

From the preface:

"Having brought this my second monograph to a close, I am led to hope that my labours in the elucidation of a tribe of birds hitherto involved in much confusion, will not be destitute of some degree of value, more especially in the eyes of ornithologists, introducing to their notice as it does many new species, and clearing up the difficulties with which many of those even common in our cabinets have been previously surrounded, difficulties arising from several causes, among which may be enumerated the differences in plumage, which obtain so often between the males and females, as well as between the young males and the adults of the same sex, in some of the minor groups; to which may be added the circumstances of the subject not having been attempted by naturalists possessing command of those many resources necessary for extricating the subject from the labyrinth of confusion in which it has long been involved.

The Birds Of Europe

Vol. I: Raptores

John Gould

Colour plates: John Gould, Elizabeth Gould, Edward Lear

Published by the author

1837

This is the first volume of the five volume Birds Of Europe which was originally published in 22 parts between 1832 and 1837.

From the preface:

"It has been frequently remarked that the productions of distant countries have received a much larger share of attention than those objects by which we are more immediately surrounded; and it is certainly true, that while numerous and costly illustrations have made us acquainted with the Ornithology of most other parts of the world, the Birds of Europe, in which we are, or ought to be, most interested, have not received that degree of attention which they naturally demand. The present work has been undertaken to supply this deficiency, and I cannot but feel highly gratified that a number of concurring circumstances have enabled me to carry my intentions into effect with comparative facility, and I hope to the entire satisfaction of the whole of the Subscribers; this I am induced to believe is the case from the patronage with which the work has been honoured since its commencement. .....

Perhaps I may be allowed to add, that not only by far the greater number of the Plates of this work, but all those of my Century of Birds, of the Monograph of the Trogons, and at least three fourths of the Monograph of the Toucans have been drawn and lithographed by Mrs. Gould, from sketches and designs by myself always taken from nature. The remainder of the drawings have been made by Mr. Lear, whose abilities as an artist are so generally acknowledged that any comments of my own are unnecessary.

A Century Of Birds From The Himalaya Mountains

John Gould

Text: N.A. Vigors

1831

From the preface:

"The acquisition of a small but valuable collection of Birds from the Himalayan Mountains by Mr. John Gould, F.L.S., Superintendent of the Ornithological Collection of the Zoological Society, afforded an opportunity, in the course of last year, of giving a sample of the Ornithology of that interesting range. The opportunity also occurring of employing the well-known abilities of Mrs. Gould in delineating these birds, it was considered expedient to make a selection of a hundred of the most important for publication, with the assurance of the execution of the Plates being equal to the interest of the subjects. The specimens were occasionally exhibited at the evening meetings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society, and descriptions given from time to time of the new species, which were subsequently published in the Proceedings of the Committee. In the course of the exhibition of the original collection, a few subjects were added from the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, from the Museums at Glasgow and Liverpool, and that of the Hon. C. J. Shore, figures of which were incorporated in the Work. The Century is now completed: and the following detailed descriptions of the species are intended to accompany the Plates. The whole of the original specimens from which the Plates were taken, amounting to ninety, are deposited in the Museum of the Zoological Society, to which they were most liberally presented by Mr. Gould. A reference to the collections to which the remaining ten belong, will be added to the description of the respective species."
