A Second Book of British Birds and their Nests

Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald

Illustrations: Allen W. Seaby

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1954

"Here is another book about British birds and their nests. I have written this second one because you liked the first book so much, and I hope you will enjoy this one just as well. Once again, Allen Seaby has given you lovely coloured pictures of the birds I have written about. They are all quite common birds, though you will have to visit the sea-coast to see some of them. I have tried to tell you where to look for each bird, a little about its habits and also its nests."

A Third Book of British Birds and their Nests

Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald

Illustrations: Roland Green

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1956

"Well, here is a third book about British birds and their nests, and I hope you will like it as much as you did the other two. This time, Roland Green, a very famous bird artist, has painted beautiful pictures of the birds I have written about. If you look at these carefully, you should easily recognise the birds when you see them. All the birds in this book are common - though some are more common than others. However, to see one or two, you will have to visit places like the seashore or big ponds."

British Wild Flowers

Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald

Illustrations: Rowland and Edith Hilder

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1957

"Here is another Ladybird book for country lovers to go with the three books about British birds. The beautiful and exciting paintings are by Rowland and Edith Hilder. If you look at them carefully you ought to be able to recognise the different wild flowers easily whenever you come across them. Most of them are very common and grow in just the sort of places you go to for picnics or for a wlk. But I have also put in one or two uncommon ones, because it is such fun looking for them and so exciting when you find them."

British Wild Animals

George Cansdale

Illustrations: Roland Green

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1958

"Although much of the country-side is covered with farms and towns, there are still lots of wild animals to be seen if we keep our eyes open and watch patiently. Even in the parks of our large cities, Squirrels may be seen playing in the trees or Bats flying around at dusk. Many wild animals are hunters by night, spending the day asleep in their hide-outs. Others, like Field Voles and Shrews, mostly keep out of sight, while Bats and Dormice sleep most of the winter. So most of these creatures, both large and small, are more difficult to watch than birds; but if we really try we can spot some of them and study their habits."

What to Look For in Winter

E L Grant-Watson

Illustrations: C.F. Tunnicliffe

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1959

"Many people seem to think that there is nothing to see in the countryside during the cold, wet winter months. This little book written by E L Grant Watson and most beautifully illustrated by C F Tunnicliffe, R.A., is designed to show how very many things there are to interest you if you know what to look for - and where to look. It will add considerably to the pleasure of a winter walk."

Garden Flowers

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1960

"This Ladybird Book of Garden Flowers is a good companion to the one about British Wild Flowers. The beautiful paintings are by John Leigh-Pemberton, and if you examine these carefully you will easily recognise the different plants when you see them in gardens or public parks. Most varieties are frequently grown, but I have also included several plants usually only cultivated by gardeners who are really fond of flowers."

What to Look for in Summer

E L Grant-Watson

Illustrations: C.F. Tunnicliffe

Ladybird Books Series 536: Nature

Wills & Hepworth

1960

"In summer, when the days are warmer and the sun rises early and sets late, there are many, many things in the country to discover, appreciate, and sometimes to collect. Have you ever walked in the country on a summer's night? As the sky darkens you can listen to the night-time sounds, many of which you will probably never have heard before. As you stand quite still by some field gate, you will perhaps hear the crunching of the small jaws of caterpillars, the zoom of gnats, the squeaking of field-mice, or the distant bark of a fox. You will hear, too, the passing of birds high overhead, the curlew's call, the drumming of snipe and hooting of owls. In this book C.F. Tunnicliffe, R.A., has beautifully illustrated in colour some of the things you can look for, and with its help you will find the pleasure of a day – or night – in the country is greatly increased."

"There are many, many things to look for in Autumn, just as there are at other times of the year. You will of course, soon, find such things as blackberries and hazel nuts, but if you know where to look you might also find nests of the wood wasp or bumble bee. This book will increase the pleasure of your country walks in Autumn."
