Taking Flight: The Birds of Langford Lowfields

"Mascot Media has published renowned bird artist Michael Warren's second book of colourful sketches from Langford Lowfields, the Nottinghamshire sand and gravel pit being transformed into the newest RSPB reserve. Mike has been sketching the growing number of species (latest count 189) attracted to Langford Lowfields every month since 1989, with this second volume, 'Taking Flight: the Birds of Langford Lowfields', including his monthly sketches from 1999-2014, completing his artistic record of this important wildlife project. Printed in the UK and containing more than 190 pages of MIke's stunning work, 'Taking Flight' includes a foreword by Simon Barnes, who explains that "Mike can make birds live again. Not just the shape and the colours; the movement, the attitude, the moving spirit. He can do this with an elaborate painting, but for me it’s all the more vivid when done – suggested, hinted at – with a few deft and thoughtful lines."

"In this Michael's sixth book, he has brought together the material collected during years of travelling to all 50 American States. The earliest trips at the beginning of the 1970's were to research work for an exhibition at the Carl Battaglia Gallery in New York but the majority of trips through the 1980's and early 1990's were to gather material for projects initiated by Jim Helzer for the National Audubon Society and Unicover Corporation. Some of the locations and birds shown in the book are well known but there are some specialist birds and less visited locations. The book conveys the varied habitats and landscapes and richness of both plant and birdlife to be found on this amazing continent. Michael has been able to combine the enthusiasm of the dedicated birdwatcher with the unique talent of an artist able to portray the atmosphere and often intricate environment in which the birds exist and to convey the varied tapestry of American birdlife."

There and Back: A Celebration of Bird Migration

"This book is a celebration of the phenomenon of migration, through the words and pictures of those seeped in its appreciation-of artists, regular migration-observers, scarce-migrant hunters, ringers, scientists who use satellite tags to follow migrants and of those who attempt to protect migrants during their often lengthy journeys.

A series of essays looks at migration in a diversity of animals with a deserved emphasis on birds. Examples are drawn from across the world's great migration flyways but as the book progresses, the focus narrows, first towards southern Europe and the problems faced by migrants on some of the Mediterranean islands and then to the UK where migration-watching seems to fascinate so many of us.

The book is profusely illustrated with work from some of Europe's foremost contemporary wildlife artists.

All royalties generated from the sale of this book will go to BirdLife International (Malta) to help them to continue their work in protecting migrant birds."

Drawing Inspiration from the Hula Valley

"The artwork in this book forms a unique portrait of the Hula Valley, an important agricultural region in northern Israel. This area is located at the crossroads of Eurasia and Africa and is situated along the Great Rift Valley. It is an area rich in wetlands, woodlands, open fields and mountains, and is a critical stopover, breeding, and wintering site for more than 300 bird species, 20 of which are globally threatened. An estimated 500 million birds pass through here while migrating, which is why the Hula Valley is currently being proposed as the largest UNESCO World Heritage Transnational Serial Nomination. The Israel Ornithological Center of the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI) teamed up with the International Artists for Nature Foundation (ANF) to produce this book. They brought together 34 artists from around the world to participate in two festivals held during the winter of 2008 and the spring of 2009. The reproductions of their works shows us the Hula Valley in all its splendour."

"Inspired by the potential of lowland England's most ambitious habitat restoration project, twenty nine artists produced work that shows the riches that hang on in the remnants of fenland. These remnants will be enhanced as the Great Fen Project acquires more land and achieves its first objective of linking Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen National Nature Reserves. This book features the body of work generated from the artistic reaction to this unique landscape. It shows a variety of styles and topics, ranging across field sketches of birds and other animals, detailed botanical and entomological studies, landscapes that are instantly recognisable and landscapes that are almost abstract, sculptures using scrap metal found in the area, and transient paintings of dragonflies on bog oaks dug from the peat. Their artistic vision matches the vision that has inspired the Great Fen Project."

"This book is the result of two journeys through the Tumbesian region of Peru and Ecuador by twenty wildlife artists from twelve countries. The artists responded to a request for help from a group of local conservation organisations, Bosques Sin Fronteras (BSF), which is seeking to maintain the biodiversity of the forests of the Tumbesian region. As a first step to raising awareness of the region's importance, Birdlife International, with help from WWF and other interested groups, is supporting the efforts of the Artists for Nature Foundation to help bring attention to the area through art.
