A Pocket Photo Guide to the Birds of Nepal

Prajwal Pradhan

Falcon Publications

2017

"This pocket photo guidebook is a collection of some common and uncommon birds found in Nepal. Images from non-digital (celluloid) media as early as 1992 to recent digital ones as of October 2016 have been included. Like other photo guidebooks, this book has been designed for easy identification of Nepal’s birds. Most of the photographs are of adult males, with some photographs showing females. Juveniles have been excluded in this book as they are difficult to identify and are a little beyond the scope of this book. Photographs of birds in flight are included for some species like the raptors (birds of prey) which enables easy identification. For each bird species, the genus and family are mentioned in a colour tab for easy access. The common name, scientific name, average length and Nepali name in Nepalese text is given. A general description is given of the appearance and characteristics.

Bird Migration Across the Himalayas: Wetland Functioning Amidst Mountains and Glaciers

Editor: Herbert HT Prins, Tsewang Namgail

Cambridge University Press

2017

"Birds migrating across the Himalayan region fly over the highest peaks in the world, facing immense physiological and climatic challenges. The authors show the different strategies used by birds to cope with these challenges. Many wetland avian species are seen in the high-altitude lakes of the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau, such as Bar-Headed Geese. Ringing programmes have generated information about origins and destinations, and Bird Migration Across the Himalayas is the first to present information on the bird's exact migratory paths. Capitalising on knowledge generated through satellite telemetry, the authors describe the migratory routes of a multitude of birds flying over or skirting the Himalayas. The myriad of threats to migratory birds and the wetland system in the Central Asian Flyway are discussed, with ways to mitigate them. Bird Migration Across the Himalayas will inform and persuade policy-makers and conservation practitioners to take appropriate measures for the long-term survival of this unique migration."

Birds of the Indian Subcontinent: A Field Guide

Ranjit Manakadan, J.C. Daniel, and Nikhil Bhopale

Illustrations: John Henry Dick

Oxford University Press

2011

"This book is a revised edition of a pictorial guide to the birds of the Indian subcontinent first published in 1983. The book deals with the birds of the Indian Subcontinent - India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, including the islands of Andaman and Nicobars, Lakshadweep, and Maldives and not includes Afghanistan and the Chagos Archipelago. The main part of the book is taken up by bird topography and complemented by 112 plates containing illustrations of 1251 species to describe how their family/species perceived in the society. Additional notes of over 100 definite species are also provided to add special flavour to the reader. The Guide contains species descriptions to aid field identification, as there are quite a few bird species where a pictorial representation is not sufficient, especially to identify similar looking birds. The brief descriptions of the species have been added to enable quick identification, except for species where more detailing is required."

Important Bird Areas in Nepal: Key Sites for Conservation

Hem Sagar Baral, Carol Inskipp

Bird Conservation Nepal

2005

"Nepal's birdlife is among the richest in Asia, particularly considering the small size of the country. In total, 862 species have been recorded so far, including nearly 600 breeding species and 31 globally threatened species. This book provides an overview of diversity of bird life in different agro-ecological and climatic zones of Nepal. Current status, threat and consequences are identified and conservation needs are recommended. The book also highlights 27 critical biological sites for bird and biodiversity conservation in Nepal. Thirteen out of 27 critical sites are within the protected area system, meaning they are relatively safer, and the rest are spread in and around wetlands, woodlots, river valleys and watersheds. In addition, five potentially important areas have also been identified which provide conservationists additional opportunities for timely action to protect Nepal's avifaunal diversity. This IBA inventory fills the gap on national biodiversity inventory and helps government fulfill its obligations towards the CBD. It is hoped that the book will provide guidance to decision makers and planners to geographically focus financial and human resources, and avoid negative impact in land-use and development planning."

A Himalayan Ornithologist: Life and Work of Brian Houghton Hodgson

Mark Cocker and Carol Inskipp

Oxford University Press

1988

"Our present-day knowledge of the birds of the Himalayan region can be traced back to the pioneering work of Brian Houghton Hodgson who was a 19th century naturalist, scholar and administrator. Born in Cheshire in 1800, Hodgson was resident in Kathmandu for many years and he described or collected over 120 species of birds new to science. He trained a team of Nepalese artists to produce water-colour plates of the birds of the Himalayas; this was never completed, but the collection of paintings is now in the possession of the Zoological Society of London. Most of the 49 plates selected for this volume have never been published before. While concentrating primarily upon Hodgson's ornithological work, this book also describes his contributions to other branches of natural history and ethnography, as well as his work on the nature of the Buddhist religion. His administrative career is also outlined and there is a chapter describing the changes to the bird life of the region since Hodgson's time."

Distributional Notes On Nepal Birds

Robert L. Fleming and Melvin A. Traylor

Fieldiana: Zoology, Volume 53, Number 3

Chicago Natural History Museum

1968

From the introduction: "The specimens that are the subject of the present report were collected in Nepal by the senior author during the years 1962-1966. The majority were taken between May, 1964 and April, 1965 when Fleming was on leave from the United Mission to Nepal to conduct research on the ferns and birds of Nepal under a Fulbright Grant. The total number of birds collected was not large, but through careful choice of collecting localities and selection of specimens in the field, Fleming was able to add considerably to our knowledge of the distribution of Nepal birds. He succeeded in taking 76 species and subspecies that he had not previously found, and of these 24 are here recorded for the first time from the country. The known ranges of many others were extended, or apparent gaps in their ranges were filled in."

Fieldiana: Zoology, Volume 35, Number 8

Chicago Natural History Museum

1961

From the introduction: "The present report, which is intended as a supplement to Birds from Nepal (Rand and Fleming, 1957), is based on collections made by Dr. Fleming in Nepal during the period 1956-59. All species not included in the previous report are listed here, and also those species concerning which further collecting has added information. The pressure of his regular duties has prevented Dr. Fleming from making many extensive collecting trips, and the majority of the birds reported on here come from the central valley and the adjacent terai. However, there were three short trips of particular interest to Morang District in the southeastern terai, to the Gandak-Kosi watershed above 10,000 feet, and to Bajhang state in extreme western Nepal that produced several new records for the country as a whole as well as many species new to Fleming's collection."

Birds From Nepal

Austin L. Rand, Robert L. Fleming

Fieldiana: Zoology, Volume 41, Number 1

Chicago Natural History Museum

1957

From the introduction: "Ripley (1950a, p. 355) has summarized the brief history of ornithology in Nepal, from the pioneer work of Brian Hodgson to his own 1947-49 collecting trips. The present report deals with the collections made by the junior author in Nepal on a series of trips between 1949 and 1954. During this time he was with the Board of World Missions of the Methodist Church, first as Supervisor of Woodstock High School at Mussoorie, United Provinces, India (1949-53), and then as superintendent of the Medical Mission to Nepal, in Kathmandu (1958-54). The collections comprise about 2,500 specimens, representing some 490 species and subspecies."

A Century Of Birds From The Himalaya Mountains

John Gould

1831

From the preface:

"The acquisition of a small but valuable collection of Birds from the Himalayan Mountains by Mr. John Gould, F.L.S., Superintendent of the Ornithological Collection of the Zoological Society, afforded an opportunity, in the course of last year, of giving a sample of the Ornithology of that interesting range. The opportunity also occurring of employing the well-known abilities of Mrs. Gould in delineating these birds, it was considered expedient to make a selection of a hundred of the most important for publication, with the assurance of the execution of the Plates being equal to the interest of the subjects. The specimens were occasionally exhibited at the evening meetings of the Committee of Science and Correspondence of the Zoological Society, and descriptions given from time to time of the new species, which were subsequently published in the Proceedings of the Committee. In the course of the exhibition of the original collection, a few subjects were added from the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, from the Museums at Glasgow and Liverpool, and that of the Hon. C. J. Shore, figures of which were incorporated in the Work. The Century is now completed: and the following detailed descriptions of the species are intended to accompany the Plates. The whole of the original specimens from which the Plates were taken, amounting to ninety, are deposited in the Museum of the Zoological Society, to which they were most liberally presented by Mr. Gould. A reference to the collections to which the remaining ten belong, will be added to the description of the respective species."
