Atlas rozmieszczenia ptakow legowych Polski 1985-2004 / The Atlas of Breeding Birds in Poland 1985-2004

Gerard Gorman

Bogucki Wydawnictwo Naukowe

Polish and English

2008

"This book is the first national atlas of breeding birds in Poland. Detailed maps, showing distribution are presented for each of the 234 species, which currently breed in the country. The information on distribution of each species in approximately 3 000 grid squares is primarily based on the field data collected by more than 1 200 volunteer observers. Maps are accompanied by species accounts written by nearly one hundred leading Polish ornithologists. Basic data presented for each species involve information on habitat preferences, breeding area, vertical range, regional numbers with most important breeding sites, typical within-habitat and landscape densities, as well as on population sizes and trends over the last decades (both additionally described in a separate chapters). The book is divided into two parts: Polish and English; the latter includes an extensive summary and shortened species accounts (over 65 pages in total) with generalized maps."

Central and Eastern European Wildlife

Gerard Gorman

Bradt

2008

"The wildlife of eastern Europe is one of the unexpected attractions of a region best known for its cultural assets: relatively few visitors are aware of the diversity on their holiday doorstep, from brown bears and wolves to numerous birds no longer common in the west of the continent. Accessible and beautifully illustrated, the guide will appeal both to the holidaymaker and to the serious naturalist seeking a compact volume to carry around. And after the trip, it will also make an attractive souvenir. The guide covers the wildlife of: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Kaliningrad, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina."

Biebrza Marshes

Crossbill Guides Foundation

2005

"The marshes of the Biebrza river in northeastern Poland form one of the most intact lowland river ecosystem in the whole of Europe. The Biebrza itself is a fairly small river that meanders through a very wide valley in the gently undulating landscape of the Polish province of Podlasia. What makes this area so special is that the river is almost completely unregulated. The water courses, both from spring to mouth as from the river bed to the glacial moraines, follow their natural cycle. Along its entire length, the river is scarcely troubled by the hand of man. In spring the wide valleys are submerged by the floods, creating a massive and highly varied marshland. As the river water retreats, it leaves behind a marshland which is home to a bewildering variety of flora and fauna. The Biebrza is a relict of a landscape, huge flat wetlands, that once dominated the coastal margins of the Northern European Plain .... The Crossbill Guide to the Biebrza marshes introduces you to this fascinating region and provides you with itineraries which allow you to discover the area at your own pace "

Bialowieza Primeval Forest

Crossbill Guides Foundation

2005

"The Bialowieza primeval forest is one of the most famous National Parks in Europe. Despite appearing to a modern visitor as a huge wilderness, this is but a remnant of the vast and forbidding forest that once stretched across much of the continent. Bialowieza lies on the border between Belarus and Poland. In fact, the border divides the forest complex into two roughly equal parts (the Polish part being only slightly smaller). Of this massive forest, only a small part is strict reserve and can truly be called a primeval forest ..... For a visitor the Bialowieza forest can be an overpowering place. It is attractive by virtue of its extraordinary wildlife and yet dauntingly vast. Armed with our guide you will be able confidently to explore this area and maximise your chance of a truly magical experience. The Crossbill Guide provides a beautifully illustrated and detailed guide to the Bialowieza primeval forest. It both introduces you to the area and provides you with itineraries that allow you to discover the area at your own pace."

Predation in Vertebrate Communities: The Bialowieza Primeval Forest as a Case Study

B. Jedrzejewska and W. Jedrzejewski

Springer

1998

"This volume presents carnivores, raptors and their prey in the complicated net of interrelationships, and shows them against the background of their biotic and abiotic settings. It is based on long-term research conducted in the best preserved woodland of Europe's temperate zone. The role of predation, whether limiting or regulating prey (ungulate, rodent, shrew, bird, and amphibian) populations, is quantified and compared to parts played by other factors: climate, food resources for prey, and availability of other potential resources for predators."
