The Seabird's CryAdam Nicholson
William Collins
2017
"In ten chapters, each dedicated to a different bird, and each beautifully illustrated by Kate Boxer, The Seabird's Cry travels the ocean paths along with them, looking at the way their bodies work, the sense of their own individuality, the strategies and tactics needed to survive and thrive in the most demanding environment on earth. At the heart of The Seabird's Cry are the Shiant Isles, a cluster of Hebridean islands in the Minch but Nicolson has pursued the birds much further across the Atlantic, up the west coast of Ireland, to St Kilda, Orkney, Shetland, the Faeroes, Iceland and Norway; to the eastern seaboard of Maine and to Newfoundland, to the Falklands, South Georgia, the Canaries and the Azores – reaching out across the widths of the world ocean which is the seabirds' home. But a global tragedy is unfolding. Even as we are coming to understand them, the number of seabirds is in freefall, dropping by nearly 70% in the last sixty years, a billion fewer now than there were in 1950. Of the ten birds in The Seabird's Cry, seven are in decline, at least in part of their range. Extinction stalks the ocean and there is a danger that the grand cry of a seabird colony, rolling around the bays and headlands of high latitudes, will this century become little but a memory."

2014
"Seabirds showcases and celebrates some of our most exciting and enigmatic bird species as vital and living components of one of our greatest natural assets: our coastline. Our seabird populations are of international importance, and provide some of our richest and most dramatic natural spectacles. Between them seabird species exploit every type of coastline - from flat beach and sheer cliff face to rugged moorland and busy seaside town - and show great diversity in form and behaviour, but they all depend on the coast and open sea for survival. As such, they are highly vulnerable to the many factors affecting the balance of marine life, from climate change and over-fishing to coastal development and erosion. Many of them migrate huge distances around the world outside of the breeding season, visiting the shores of far-flung countries and the open sea hundreds of miles from land, so the time they spend on our coasts is just a part of their far-reaching life stories. Species by species, Seabirds looks in detail at their characteristics, way of life, and their conservation past and present, revealing many new insights into the lives of these familiar but mysterious birds."

Seabird Breeding Atlas of the Lesser AntillesKatharine Lowrie, David Lowrie and Natalia Collier
Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC)
2012
"The Seabird Breeding Atlas of the Lesser Antilles makes available data and narrative related to Environmental Protection in the Caribbean's (EPIC) census of breeding seabirds in the Lesser Antilles. The book provides information on methodology, species profiles and distribution maps and tables by species and country/territory, and site specific threats. The Atlas reports key individual islands for breeding seabirds in the Lesser Antilles, nations or territories supporting the greatest number of globally and regionally important populations and clarifies the significance of the region in relation to Caribbean-wide populations. Species with restricted breeding ranges are also identified. The study covered 3,162 nautical miles and over 200 islands between 2009 and 2010. Every island, islet, or cay above the high-tide level capable of supporting seabirds was surveyed by land and/or sea. Surveys were conducted over a two-year period to account for variations in breeding cycles. The only islands not surveyed by EPIC were locations for which colleagues contributed recent data. A full seabird population survey for this region had never previously been undertaken. Existing records varied greatly from areas of intense research, to sites where data were based on anecdotal notes, sometimes dating back to the early 19th century. This ground-breaking study sheds light on numerous undocumented seabird breeding colonies, as well as colonies previously thought extirpated. The standardised methods and results will provide a baseline for the future monitoring of seabirds within the region and guide conservation priorities."

Seabird Islands: Ecology, Invasion, and RestorationEdited by Christa PH Mulder, Wendy B Anderson, David R Towns and Peter J Bellingham
Oxford University Press USA
2011
"Islands with large colonies of seabirds are found throughout the globe. Seabird islands provide nesting and roosting sites for birds that forage at sea, deposit marine nutrients on land, and physically alter these islands. Habitats for numerous endemic and endangered animal and plant species, seabird islands are therefore biodiversity hotspots with high priority for conservation. Successful campaigns to eradicate predators (e.g., rats and cats) from seabird islands have been conducted worldwide. However, removal of predators will not necessarily lead to natural recovery of seabirds or other native species. Restoration of island ecosystems requires social acceptance of eradications, knowledge of how island food webs function, and a long-term commitment to measuring and assisting the recovery process. This book, written collaboratively by and for ecologists and resource managers, provides the first large-scale cross-system compilation, comparison, and synthesis of the ecology of seabird island systems."

An Inventory of Breeding Seabirds of the CaribbeanEditor: Patricia E. Bradley, Robert L. Norton
University Press of Florida
2009
"This island-by-island inventory of Caribbean seabirds includes colony locations and estimates of the numbers of breeding pairs, the severe threats that seabirds face, and proposals for research and conservation measures. In the past two decades, global populations of seabirds have declined faster than any other group of birds, yet almost no conservation resources are expended to counteract this trend, especially among tropical seabirds. This volume includes twenty-five national accounts, written by professional and amateur ornithologists, and illustrated by maps specially prepared by William Mackin and The Nature Conservancy. This inventory brings together the best and most complete set of data on breeding seabirds that nest on the islands throughout the Caribbean, making it invaluable for anyone interested in sustaining seabird populations."

Profiles of Seabirds and Waterbirds of the German North and Baltic SeasBettina Mendel, Nicole Sonntag, Johannes Wahl, Philipp Schwemmer, Henriette Dries, Nils Guse, Sabine Muller and Stefan Garthe
Landwirtschaftsverlag
2008
"In 2005, protected areas for moulting and wintering offshore seabirds were designated in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (i.e. marine waters 12 to 200 nautical miles from land) in the North and Baltic Seas. Both sites, the "Eastern German Bight" and the "Pomeranian Bay", are incorporated in the European Natura 2000 network and, being more than 5,000 square kilometres in total, are among Europe's largest bird protection areas. Compiling published and unpublished data, this book provides profiles on the ecology of 27 bird species protected under European legislation and will be used in developing species-tailored conservation measures. The sensitivities of these seabird species to specific anthropogenic factors in the open sea are assessed, based on an examination of the birds' morphological, behavioural and foraging characteristics. Presenting the current state of expert knowledge in a clear and comprehensible form, this book is an essential foundation for the elaboration of conservation policies and the assessment of the effects of human activities on birds and their habitats in the seas."

Flight Identification of European Seabirds Anders Blomdahl, Bertil Breife, Niklas Holmstrom
Christopher Helm
2007
Reissue, in a new format, of book published in 2003.
"Seawatching can present identification difficulties to even the most experienced birdwatcher, and demands a specialised set of skills and strategies to deal with the challenges of bad weather and poor visibility. The rewards can be great; many species of seabird live exclusively at sea outside their breeding seasons, while many others undertake regular coastal migrations. At established ‘watchpoints' around European coastlines, patient observation may reveal spectacular numbers of passing seabirds, while today the growing popularity of whale-watching and ‘pelagic' boat excursions makes it possible to get closer to many offshore species. This unique field guide is indispensable to all birdwatchers who seawatch, whether from land or at sea, and will greatly enhance their experience."

Seabirds: A Natural HistoryTony Gaston
Poyser
2004
"This title takes an in-depth look at the lives of the world's true seabirds - the penguins, tubenoses, peleceaniids, gulls, terns, skuas and auks. These birds all spend much of their lives foraging at sea, but the range of ways that they are adapted to exploit the marine environment and balance this with the need to return to land to breed, is astoundingly diverse. They range from the albatrosses, which take their prey from the surface of the water and are capable of efficient gliding flight for hours on end, to the penguins which have dispensed with flight altogether and have developed a morphology and physiology which enables them to dive deeper and for longer than any other birds. The various problems of being a bird which forages at sea, and the array of solutions evolution has produced to counter them are the theme of this book, which should fascinate everyone with an interest in pelagic birds."

It comprises an exciting collection of over 740 seabird photographs by more than 300 of the world's leading seabird photographers and researchers. The majority of these photographs have never been published before, and include pictures of some of the rarest and most enigmatic birds in the world - species such as the recently discovered Amsterdam Albatross, the Chinese Black-headed Gull, the Relict Gull, and the near-extinct Short-tailed Albatross. Of special value are the flight shots of some of the most difficult-to-identify groups of birds. "Seabirds of the World" represents easily the largest and most complete collection of seabird photographs ever published. "....describes the business of conducting biological studies on seabirds in remote parts of eastern Canada. Several themes are engagingly interwoven: the sheer beauty of the Arctic environment, the intriguing biology of its wildlife, and the discovery and exploitation of enormous seabird colonies, including the destruction of the Great Auk. Tim Birkhead describes in personal detail the different facets of research and brings to life both the difficulties and the excitement of working in the Arctic. What is it like setting up a camp for four months on a remote and uninhabited island not far from the North Pole? How does it feel to commute daily by inflatable boat amidst icebergs to study-areas located on towering cliffs, set between ice-blue glaciers? What do you do when a Polar bear decides that you have invaded its Arctic home? Why are the seabird colonies in the high Arctic so enormous? What do we know about lifestyle of the extinct Great Auk? In 1992 Canada's legendary cod fishery was finally destroyed - what are the consequences of this for other wildlife? These are just a few of the questions dealt with in this book." The Status of Seabirds in Britain & IrelandC.Lloyd,M.L.Tasker and K.PartridgeIllustrations: Keith Brockie
Poyser
1991
"This book presents the most up to date information available on these seabird populations, their numbers and distributions, and their changing fortunes in recent years. The surveys of Operations Seafarer, carried out in 1969 and 1970 provided a baseline for future work which led to the establishment of the Seabird Colony Register by the Seabird Group and the Nature Conservancy Council. The result and analysis of their counts during 1985 to 1987 form the basis for this book. Improved census methodology and a new computerized data base set the standards for seabird monitoring in future decades. The book begins by describing the general biology and population trends of British seabirds and goes on to assess the results and to analyze each of the 24 breeding species in detail. Full descriptions of the counting methods and the estimating factors used provide guidelines for future surveys not only in Britain, but whenever seabirds are of interest and importance."

Seabirds: Feeding Ecology and Role in Marine EcosystemsEditor: J.P. Croxall
Cambridge University Press
1986
Reprint: 2009
"Originally published in 1986, this book is concerned with the ways in which seabirds function as predators in the marine environment; in particular about how they find and catch food and how much of it they consume. It reviews both the feeding ecology of seabirds (including adaptations for flight and diving) and also most of the leading field studies (in polar, temperate and tropical regions) that have quantitatively examined the interactions of seabird communities with their prey."

Sea-BirdsJames Fisher & R.M. Lockley
Collins
New Naturalist 28
1954
"This book introduces the reader to the sea-birds of the North Atlantic, an ocean in which about half the world sea-bird species have been seen at one time or another. Sea-birds are generally more cosmopolitan and widespread than most land birds; and it is no surprise to the ornithologist to find that the communities on the American and European sides of the Atlantic are very similar, most of their member-species being common to both. The authors of this book have spent most of their active lives in research on sea-birds, Lockley specialising in Life-histories, Fisher in distribution and numbers. Each has a long record of exploration of the remotest parts of the Atlantic coast and islands. Their felicitous collaboration brings home for the first time to the general bird-watcher and sea-going naturalist what enormous strides have been recently made in our knowledge of sea-birds. We now know the world population of several soecies, and can follow with accuracy the changes in the numbers of many."

Oceanic Birds of South AmericaA Study Of Species Of The Related Coasts And Seas, Including The American Quadrant Of Antarctica, Based Upon The Brewster-Sanford Collection In The American Museum Of Natural HistoryRobert Cushman Murphy
Paintings: Francis L. Jaques
The Macmillan Company / American Museum Of Natural History
1936
Published in two volumes.
From the introduction: "Collections of South American birds are among the oldest still preserved in natural history museums. Without exception, however, such historic series are chiefly made up of species inhabiting the land areas or the inland waters of the continent. Systematic field work devoted to sea birds, particularly to such as are truly pelagic, has been undertaken only within the modern era of ornithology, and never in South America as a whole until the time of the Brewster-Sanford Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History."

Ocean BirdsJ.F. Green
Illustrations: Frances E. Green
R.H. Porter
1887
From the preface: "The following notes on ocean birds, their appearance and habits, have been compiled with the special object of interesting, and at the same time, to some small extent, instructing a special class of readers - those who are led by business, or pleasure, or the pursuit of health, to take a long sea voyage. And it may be stated at the outset that the birds depicted and described in the following pages are those usually seen in the course of a voyage from England to Australia or New Zealand round the Cape of Good Hope, and home round Cape Horn, thus completing a tour round the world. Those of us alone who have made a voyage of this kind can appreciate fully the interest which attaches to Ocean Bird-life."
