Waterbirds Of Australian

Don Hadden

New Holland Publishers

2010

"Australia supports a fascinating variety of waterbirds, from the Jabiru (more properly known as the Black-necked Stork) to two native hens. Amongst the shorebirds are about 30 migratory waders. There are ibis and spoonbills, extremely secretive and discreetly plumaged crakes and rails, and 23 species of the Ardeidae family of herons, egrets, bitterns and night-herons. All have been captured in their natural environment by nature photographer Don Hadden, following on from his Birds of Australia and Birds of the Outback."

International Single Species Action Plan for the Conservation of the Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia

Compiled by Patrick Triplet, Otto Overdijk, Michael Smart, Szabolcs Nagy, Martin Schneider-Jacoby, E. Sühendan Karauz, Csaba Pigniczki, Sherif Baha El Din, Jelena Kralj, Attila Sandor, Juan G. Navedo

Technical Series No. 35

AEWA

2008

Prepared and printed with funding from Vogelbescherming Nederland (BirdLife Netherlands).

From the executive summary: "The Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia is distributed from the East Atlantic to India and China. Four or five populations/subspecies can be distinguished: Platalea leucorodia leucorodia, the nominate subspecies, is distributed from Western to Central Europe/Southeast Europe. It is often separated into two populations, the Atlantic and Central/Southeast European, differing in their distribution and ecology, in particular during the breeding season. The population which breeds in eastern Europe and throughout Asia has been designated as a separate subspecies, Platalea leucorodia major on the basis that it is larger in size than the nominate subspecies. Two subspecies are found in Africa, P. l. balsaci whose distribution is limited to the Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania) and P. l. archeri, the Spoonbill of the Red Sea. These two populations are not migratory and mix with Eurasian Spoonbills during the winter."

Working Group International Waterbird and Wetland Research

1998

"To get a better view of the international importance of this area, a project was set up by the Working Group International Waterbird & Wetland Research (WIWO) in collaboration with the Direction des Parcs Nationaux du Sénégal (DPNS). The main objectives of the project in the Sine-Saloum Delta were: to count ail waterbirds in wetlands between Dakar and the border with The Gambia, especially the Sine-Saloum Delta; to pay special attention to (colour-rings of) European Spoonbills and Little Terns, their habitat choice, behaviour, etcetera; to describe the various wetlands and their threats; to judge the suitability of wetlands for monitoring purposes; to contribute to the African Waterfowl Census; to co-operate with rangers of the Direction des Parcs Nationaux du Sénégal. The results of this project are presented in this report."
