A Guide to the Birds of Trinidad & Tobago

Richard Ffrench

Artist/Art coordinator: John P. O'Neill

Christopher Helm

3rd edition

2013

"Revised edition of this classic field guide to the avifauna of these two Caribbean islands. Trinidad and Tobago are special in that nearly all the families of South American birds are well represented there. They can therefore offer the richness of the South American avifauna in a comparatively small area. This guide covers over 400 species, giving habitat and status, range, subspecies, field description, voice, food, breeding and behaviour. In addition there are sections on the history of ornithology on the islands, the islands' habitats and species distribution."

Seabird Breeding Atlas of the Lesser Antilles

Katharine Lowrie, David Lowrie and Natalia Collier

Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC)

2012

"The Seabird Breeding Atlas of the Lesser Antilles makes available data and narrative related to Environmental Protection in the Caribbean's (EPIC) census of breeding seabirds in the Lesser Antilles. The book provides information on methodology, species profiles and distribution maps and tables by species and country/territory, and site specific threats. The Atlas reports key individual islands for breeding seabirds in the Lesser Antilles, nations or territories supporting the greatest number of globally and regionally important populations and clarifies the significance of the region in relation to Caribbean-wide populations. Species with restricted breeding ranges are also identified. The study covered 3,162 nautical miles and over 200 islands between 2009 and 2010. Every island, islet, or cay above the high-tide level capable of supporting seabirds was surveyed by land and/or sea. Surveys were conducted over a two-year period to account for variations in breeding cycles. The only islands not surveyed by EPIC were locations for which colleagues contributed recent data. A full seabird population survey for this region had never previously been undertaken. Existing records varied greatly from areas of intense research, to sites where data were based on anecdotal notes, sometimes dating back to the early 19th century. This ground-breaking study sheds light on numerous undocumented seabird breeding colonies, as well as colonies previously thought extirpated. The standardised methods and results will provide a baseline for the future monitoring of seabirds within the region and guide conservation priorities."

2nd edition

2011

" Trinidad & Tobago are popular tourist destinations and the islands are also a top location for visiting birders. This comprehensive and portable field guide covers every species found on the islands. The concise text includes descriptions of every species, highlighting plumage variation and distinctions from similar species. The plates use the relevant images from Birds of Northern South America to create new plates specific for Trinidad & Tobago. This new edition has been completely revised. The plates have been extensively re-worked, with many images replaced and repainted. As a result, there are now eight extra plates, and some groups, such as flycatchers, have been repainted almost in entirety. The text has also been updated. This new edition supersedes all previous field guides to these popular islands."

A Guide to the Birds of Trinidad and Tobago

Richard Ffrench

Illustrations: John O'Neill and Don R. Eckelberry

Cornell University Press

1991

"This easy-to-use book is the second edition of a comprehensive yet compact field guide to more than 420 species of the island's birds. First published in 1973, it has been brought up to date - and a new color plate and redrawn illustrations have been added. In his introduction, Richard ffrench offers a full treatment of the history of ornithology in Trinidad and Tobago, and then sets the scene by describing the environment of the islands, including physiography, climate, and vegetation. Thirteen photographs depic the variety of habitats found on the islands. The author also details the destribution of species, their breeding and migration, as well as local conservation and protection measures. Individual species accounts, arranged by family, make up the core of this practical identification guide, covering habitat and status, range and subspecies, field description and basic measurements, voice, food, nesting, and behavior. They are illustrated by 29 color plates, 9 color portraits, and 24 drawings - the work of two of the foremost artists in Neotropical ornithology. A comprehensive bibliography lists more than 300 titles from the ornithological literature on birds of the area."
