Selectors' note: "W.H. Hudson wrote over twenty books, several of them about South America, where he was born. In making our selection we have confined ourselves to his descriptive writings of the English scene and its birds and beasts, insects and flowers. The books from which we have made our choice are Birds In A Village (1892), British Birds (1895), Birds In London (1899), Nature In Downland (1900), Birds And Man (1901), Hamphire Days (1903), The Land's End (1908), Afoot In England (1909), A Shepherd's Life (1910), Adventures Among Birds (1913), The Book Of A Naturalist (1918), A Traveller In Little Things (1921), and A Hind In Richmond Park, a book which Hudson had just completed when he died from a heart attack in London on August 18, 1922."
