The Birds of GloucestershireGordon Kirk and John Phillips
For the Gloucestershire Ornithological Coordinating Committee
Liverpool University Press
2013
"This is the most comprehensive account of Gloucestershire's birds ever produced, covering all the species recorded in the county in modern times. There are detailed maps showing the distribution and abundance of over 130 regular species, based on four years of fieldwork carried out by hundreds of volunteers. Graphs, tables and statistics illustrate the patterns of occurrence of many species, including passage migrants and rarities. Also included are descriptions of the bird habitats and the history of bird watching and conservation in the county. Some of Britain's most prominent bird artists, past and present, including Jackie Garner, Robert Gillmor, Terence Lambert, Peter Partington, Peter Scott and Keith Shackleton, have provided beautiful illustrations, which sit alongside sumptuous photographs of many of the birds and the county's landscapes."

Birds New To NorfolkKeith Dye, Mick Fiszer & Peter Allard

Wren Publishing
2009
"Birds New to Norfolk brings together, for the first time, accounts of the first recorded occurrences of all 428 species on the Norfolk List as at the end of 2008. Many of the records are the direct result of the hundreds of hours of research by the three authors checking through the ornithological literature published in earlier centuries. Accounts from the 17th century were penned by Sir Thomas Browne, while 19th century authors included John Hunt, William Whitear, the Pagets, Rev. Richard Lubbock and, of course, the legendary Henry Stevenson. Contemporary accounts have been extracted from the Norfolk Bird Reports, Norfolk Bird Club Bulletins and submissions to the British Birds Rarities Committee, as well as other sources. Others have been written specifically for this book by the birds' finders. For both researchers and general birdwatchers this book is a mine of information as well as being an enjoyable, fascinating and, at times, amusing read."

A Sky Full of Starlings: A Diary of a Birding YearStephen Moss
Cover illustration: Robert Gillmor
Aurum Press
2008
"Stephen Moss began on 1 January 2007 to chronicle each species of bird as he was seeing it for the first time last year, and continued to do so until 31 December. He writes about what he saw, where he saw it, who he was with, what it made him think and feel - the little story of each birdwatching episode, be it goldfinches on his garden feeder, seeing hen harriers nesting underneath a bridge in Glasgow, or the extraordinary rescue of a rare albatross on a Somerset beach. The result is both a unique chronicle of Britain's natural history and a touching and funny piece of autobiography - a year of life measured out in birds."

A Dream of Jewelled Fishes: Reflections on AnglingJohn Aston
Cover illustration: Robert Gillmor
Aurum Press
2007
"This is a book that brings to life over forty years of angling; it has very little to say about 'how to do it' but a great deal to say about 'why I do it' and 'what it felt like to do it'. Written in the form of an angling autobiography, it begins with boyhood expeditions to a pond in the shadow of the West Yorkshire slag heaps, and proceeds, via specimen-hunting trips to the bleak fenland dykes and forays to the lonely lochs of north-west Scotland, to the delicate business of conjuring trout out of the streams around the author's home in North Yorkshire."

This Birding Life: The Best of the Guardian's BirdwatchStephen Moss
Cover illustration: Robert Gillmor
Aurum Press
2006
"Moss's 'Birdwatch' column has over the years included nostalgic reminiscences on birdwatching as a child, accounts of birding expeditions to places as farflung as St Kilda and even Antarctica, of birding on his honeymoon in the Gambia, the birds on his garden feeder and, recently, introducing his toddler son to a first awareness of birds. Now, the best of these 'Birdwatch' columns are collected into a beautiful miniature hardback, tastefully designed and illustrated with line drawings, and together they build into a touching and fascinating chronicle of how one person's hobby has endured and evolved and in turn enriched a whole life."

The Birds Of Blakeney PointAndy Stoddart and Steve JoynerIllustrations: James McCallumCover: Robert Gillmor
Wren Publishing
2005
"Few places in Britain, or indeed anywhere, have as long an ornithological history as Blakeney Point. It has always been famous for its colony of Common Terns but was ‘discovered' in the 1880s as a haunt of autumn Bluethroats and subsequently acquired a reputation as a rich hunting ground for bird collectors. The tern colonies and breeding waders benefited from some of the country's earliest and most enlightened conservation efforts, continued today through the work of the National Trust. For modern birdwatchers, the Point continues to cast its spell, with such exciting birds as Snowy Owl and Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler now added to its growing list. This book brings together for the first time a complete account of Blakeney Point's long history of birds. It includes a description of its topography and wider natural history, a history of its ornithology, an account of migration and the influence of weather through the year, an overview of its breeding birds, tales of some great days and a full systematic list."

Naturalised Birds of the WorldChristopher Lever
Illustrations: Robert Gillmor
Poyser
2005
"This book looks at the world's naturalised (successfully introduced) species of bird. Many species have been introduced to countries outside their natural range by people, either deliberately or accidentally, with varied consequences for both those species themselves and the native fauna of their 'new' homes. In Britain, the introduced Canada Goose has quickly become ubiquitous at every lake and riverside, while the Golden Pheasant remains a scarce and unobtrusive inhabitant of a few scattered, remote woodlands. The House Sparrow and Common Starling, both in decline over parts of their native range, are thriving in a naturalised state in North America and elsewhere in the world. Naturalised populations of Mallard in various parts of the world are threatening a total of seven other duck species with extinction through hybridisation. This book discusses each species in turn, describing how, why, when and where its introduction took place, how it became established, and the ecological and economic impacts its presence has had in the country or countries it is naturalised in. Each account has a map, showing natural and introduced range, and there is a wealth of beautiful line drawings of the species concerned."

The Birds of the Western Palearctic: Concise EditionRobert Gillmor, Brian Hillcoat, C. S. Roselaar, Dorothy Vincent, D. I. M. Wallace, M. G. WilsonEditors: D. W. Snow, C. M. Perrins
Oxford University Press
1998
From the text on the inside of the book cover:
Here is the distilled esence of the definitive account of the birds of Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa - BWP, as it is generally known to thousands of users. The abridgement has been made by members of the original editorial team under the general supervision of Professor C.M. Perrins of Oxford, who has acted as Consultant Editor. Dr. D.W. Snow has condensed the original text with masterly skill, retaining all the essential information in a fraction of the space. The Concise BWP also includes much significant new material. Accounts of more than eighty species has been added and the descriptions of field characters have been revised throughout. The population and distribution sections have been rewritten to take into account new information that has become available since BWP was published. The distribution maps have also been revised and brought up to date. They are now printed in full colour for maximum clarity, and hill shading has been added to indicate the relief. More than 230 magnificent new colour plates have been specially commissioned for this edition to illustrate newly added species or to replace earlier paintings used in BWP. Where the original paintings have been retained, they are now reproduced using the latest electronic scanning techniques. For greater convenience, all plates now appear in the text. Indexes in seven European languages are included in addition to the indexes of English and scientific names. The Concise BWP is an essential reference book for all who are interested in the birds of Europe, whether at the professional level or as amateurs.

American University of Armenia
1997
"A Field Guide to Birds of Armenia clearly and effectively documents the bird life of a region largely unknown in the West but richly endowed with biological and cultural diversity. Here an international team of expert ornithologists shines the international spotlight on the fascinating birds of Armenia in one of the world's newest and very best regional field guides. The authors and their expert collaborators describe the beauty and pleasure of Armenian birds and their diverse habitats. No other work offers such effective descriptions of Armenian birds. The detailed knowledge of species distributions and relative abundances will promote and ensure wise stewardship of birds as a valuable Armenian natural resource. An especially valuable contribution is the identification of species that are suspected or known to be at risk. Highlighting these species of special concern will encourage Armenian as well as international conservation efforts to maintain and, when appropriate, rebuild viable populations to these lands."

Parrots: A Natural HistoryJohn Sparks and Tony Soper
Illustrations: Robert Gillmor
David & Charles (UK) / Checkmark Book (Facts On File?) (USA)
1990
"A natural history of parrots, this book reveals how the 333 species have diversified and spread into the arid land of Australia and even into the sub-Antarctic. The book discusses how the parrot has been valued as a pet for nearly 4,000 years, and how they were one of the natural treasures brought back from the tropics by early navigators. The trade in parrots and the destruction of the rain-forests is currently threatening 73 out of the 333 species. There are now only a handful of Spix's macaws and Mauritius parakeets left. But Psittacosis, a potentially lethal disease that people can catch from these birds, is on the increase and may be the best protection that parrots have against extinction."

"This year 1983,the British Trust for Ornithology celebrates its first fifty years and this volume records much of the history of birdwatching and ornithology since the early 1930s. This book is not a history of the BTO, but many of the trust's achievements helped fashion the development and direction of ornithology over the decades, and major aspects of the Trust's work rightly have detailed treatment. The book ranges widely, it looks at the changing bird as well as the changing birdwatcher and records the work of related conservation bodies, it considers the future and the past and includes an extensive section of useful facts and figures, whilst never loosing sight of the central theme which is the book's title." "The 83 species featured in this book, in date sequence of discovery, had not been recorded in Britain or Ireland before 1946. The original accounts of the sightings published in issues of British Birds* between 1947 and 1982 are now reprinted and supplemented with comment by Dr Sharrock on subsequent occurrences and current status. In addition, Peter Grant provides identification notes drawing attention to points not covered in the original accounts. There is also a world distribution map for each species and a line illustration to head each of the accounts. At the end of the book a section of plates reproduces 81 'first-sighting' photographs covering 32 of the species in the book."

Jim Flegg, well known to television and radio addicts, has studied all these Notes and selected the most striking and unusual for this book, with a commentary that puts them into perspective for the modern birdwatcher.

A Natural History of Britain and IrelandEric Simms
Illustrations: Robert Gillmor
Dent
1979
"The British Isles may consist of only small fragments of land off the Continent of Europe but within their shores lies an extraordinarily wide variety of scenery, fashioned by the many kinds of rock and soil that are such a feature of our islands. In fact, Britain itself is divided into two regions - fertile Lowland Britain south of a line from the Humber to the River Axe in Devon, and Highland Britain to the north with more rugged landscapes, bleaker climate and thinner, poorer soils. Ireland, on the other hand, is shaped like a saucer with a rim of hills enclosing a flatter central plain. Within the compass of the British Isles are many kinds of countryside - farmland and mountain peaks, broad-leaved woods and coniferous forests, lakes and rivers, towns and villages, peat bogs and moorland, sand dunes and shingle ridges, fens and heathlands, coastal cliffs and stacks - and each kind of countryside has a fascinating and varied flora and fauna. Yet all these types of landscape have been touched by man - nothing is wholly natural - and are subject to continuous change as the result of new social and technological developments. This book looks at the differing landscapes of the British Isles through the eyes of one naturalist who has travelled widely and observantly through them for nearly half a century. To this extent it is a personal account of the natural history that Eric Simms encountered on his travels, making wildlife sound recordings, directing films, producing natural history radio and television programmes or just exploring the fascinating plants and animals in their own surroundings. However, each chapter is also a guide to the vegetation and animals of the major habitats to be found throughout the British Isles."

Royal Society For The protection Of Birds

Selectors' note: "W.H. Hudson wrote over twenty books, several of them about South America, where he was born. In making our selection we have confined ourselves to his descriptive writings of the English scene and its birds and beasts, insects and flowers. The books from which we have made our choice are Birds In A Village (1892), British Birds (1895), Birds In London (1899), Nature In Downland (1900), Birds And Man (1901), Hamphire Days (1903), The Land's End (1908), Afoot In England (1909), A Shepherd's Life (1910), Adventures Among Birds (1913), The Book Of A Naturalist (1918), A Traveller In Little Things (1921), and A Hind In Richmond Park, a book which Hudson had just completed when he died from a heart attack in London on August 18, 1922."
