The Status And Distribution Of The European Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus In Britain In 2004Gerry Conway and Ian Henderson
BTO Report 398
British Trust For Ornithology
2005
"During the summer of 2004, a UK-wide survey was conducted, by the British Trust for Ornithology, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, English Nature and Forestry Commission, to determine the population status and distribution of the Nightjar Caprimulgus
Europaeus. The survey was based on two visits to sites (mainly 1-km squares) by volunteer observers. Professional ornithologists covered areas where volunteer coverage was low."

Development Of Methods For Surveying And Estimating Population Size Of Short-Eared Owls (Asio flammeus)John Calladine, Humphrey Crick and Chris Wernham
BTO Report 394
British Trust for Ornithology
2005
From the summary: "The short-eared owl is listed on Annex 1 of the EU Wild Birds Directive and is a qualifying species for some classified Special Protection Areas. However, estimates of the breeding population of this species in the United Kingdom are considered to be unreliable and trends largely unknown. This report reviews available information (published literature and original data sources) required to make recommendations for developing and refining survey techniques for counting breeding short-eared owls."

Changes in Survival and Recruitment of Oystercatchers Haemotopus Ostralegus at Traeth Lafan, North Wales, in Relation to Shellfish ExploitationPhilip W. Atkinson
BTO Report 393
British Trust For Ornithology
2005
"Traeth Lafan is an area of intertidal sand and mud flats located in Conwy Bay, to the eastern end of the Menai Straits. Traeth Lafan is notified as a Special Protection Area (SPA) for its use as a severe weather refuge for oystercatchers. The SCAN ringing group has ringing data on the Traeth Lafan oystercatchers going back over 25 years. It is a valuable resource, collected by volunteers, which has not yet been analysed. The data will be used by this study for two aims: firstly to help us understand the changing oystercatcher populations at Traeth Lafan, relating this where possible to past management activities; and secondly to input survival data into the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) study to model the shellfish requirements for the Traeth Lafan birds; a study which will inform future consents for shell fishery on the site."

Lark Rise Farm, Barton, Cambs (Plot 1571) The Countryside Restoration Trust Report on Breeding Birds 2003Glue, D & Carter, N
BTO Research Report 386
British Trust for Ornithology
2005
Introduction: "In Year 2003 a very fine annual census of the breeding bird community supported by Lark Rise Farm was completed for a fifth successive season. As in previous years, an ongoing crop rotation programme was maintained, with cereals as the dominant crop type with winter wheat and spring barley covering more than half the total area. There were also spring- and autumn-sown oilseed rape and grass cut for hay, as well as 5% natural regeneration, rotational set-aside and some woodland planting (see Appendix II, Habitat Summary Form). New hedge planting along the northern half of the eastern boundary, undertaken in autumn 2002, maintained an ongoing aim to improve cover for wildlife. An updated, colour Habitat Map, greatly enhanced the interpretative potential of the study."

BTO Research Report 384
British Trust for Ornithology
2004
From the executive summary: "The distributions and population trends for several species are known reasonably well in Greater London and there are several studies that have considered the bird communities of London’s green spaces. Whilst our knowledge of London’s bird populations is good, we know relatively little about the factors that actually determine the presence and abundance of species within London’s parks, private gardens and other green spaces. A thorough assessment of habitat associations is needed if we are to improve the bird diversity of these green spaces. This can be achieved through analysis of bird data in conjunction with spatially referenced habitat data, the ultimate aim being the development of management recommendations."

From the introduction: "This was the second annual survey of the breeding birds of Westfield Farm, Comberton, Cambridgeshire, using a territory mapping methodology (Marchant et al. 1990). BTO Research Report 380
British Trust for Ornithology
2004
From the executive summary: "Since a first survey of gulls using inland roosts in England in January 1953, gulls have been counted at winter roost sites in England, and later in the rest of the UK, every 10 years. The latest survey covers the winters of 2003/04 to 2005/06 and aims to provide population estimates for the five main species that winter in the country: Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus, Common Gull L. canus, Lesser Black-backed Gull L. fuscus, Herring Gull L. argentatus and Great Black-backed Gull L. marinus. In this report, we compare results obtained from roost sites surveyed in January 2004 with data from the same sites from earlier surveys in order to evaluate how wintering populations of these species have changed over the last five decades."

BTO Report 355

"Accepting the requirement for accurate information regarding the status of Common and Jack Snipe populations in Great Britain, and the problems associated with conventional survey methods for secretive, largely nocturnal or crepuscular, rarely aggregating species with a preference for little observed habitat, this report presents and discusses a range of alternative survey methodologies taken from the literature. Survey methods discussed are: simple transects, nets and ringing, nocturnal surveys, calls and playback. Each alternative approach is discussed in relation to likely effectiveness and feasibility in relation to: time constraints, habitat characteristics, locating the birds and welfare issues."

Assessing the Impacts of Shell-fishing and Mussel Farming on Oystercatcher Populations in the Wash, England, Phase 1: Identification of Model Parameters to Be RefinedClark et al
BTO Report 354
British Trust For Ornithology
2005
"This report describes behaviour-based models, and how an existing model has been used to predict the mortality rate of oystercatchers in the Wash. This model was able to distinguish between years of low and high oystercatcher mortality. Both predicted and observed mortality rates were low when shellfish were abundant, and high when shellfish were more
rare. The model was also used to advise how shellfish stocks could be managed to maintain low oystercatcher mortality rates. However, the model does have some limitations and so the report describes the data that could be collected to increase confidence in the model's predictions."

Assessing the Effects of Scaring Starlings Roosting on Blackpool PiersJ.R. Blackburn, S.J. Holloway & M.M. Rehfisch
BTO report 302
British Trust for Ornithology
2002
"Evidence has shown that birds maybe a possible source for contaminants found off the Blackpool coastline as they are known to act as carriers of Salmonella and Streptococci. Research work was carried out in 2001 (Holloway et al. 2002) to investigate the possible origin of such contaminants and has been continued in 2002. It was suspected that Starling (Sturnus vulgaris) might be a possible source of the contamination. Anecdotal information suggested that "tens of thousands" of Starlings roosted on the piers at Blackpool in the late summer and early autumn, thereby generating considerable amounts of faecal material. Observations and data collected in 2001 confirmed that large numbers of Starlings roosted on the piers. Large, regular Starling roosts are known to damage plantation trees by either breaking small branches by the sheer weight of the roosting birds and/or smothering all the surfaces with a thick coating of uric acid, which can also kill the tree (Feare 1984). Large roosts on building scan cause pitting of lime containing stonework, as the calcium carbonate content is dissolved by the acidic nature of the faeces. In order to assess the significance of the roosting Starlings as a potential source of contaminants, a scaring procedure was instigated by Environment Agency to shift the Starlings from the piers. Data were collected on numbers of birds and the water quality before, during and after the scaring in order to assess the success of the operation
